Introduction

Congleton Players are very proud to announce that during our next season of plays we will be celebrating our Eightieth Anniversary! Yes, our founders had probably by this time eighty years ago decided what their first production was to be. It was in fact “Polly with a Past” and was performed in the Town Hall in March, 1936. The tickets were sixpence each but free to the unemployed!

The Players’ next production will be the 283rd play presented to the people of Congleton and to celebrate this anniversary we hope to make our next season – from September 2015 to April 2016 – extra special. Watch this space!

The production of Harold Pinter’s “The Birthday Party” in April brought our very successful 2014-15 season to an end with a bang! Our audience had previously filled the theatre to see “The Vicar of Dibley, the Second Coming” and many relished the return of “Bouncers” in February.

It is always the Players’ aim to provide a varied programme to appeal to a wide audience. Past productions range from the Classics to the ridiculous! and include many new plays submitted in our One Act Playwriting Competitions.

And we are now pleased to announce that our new season will open in October with “Stepping Out” and continue with “The Crucible” in February and “Brassed Off” in April. What an amazing programme! Please visit us regularly on this website for further details.

Furthermore, our 2015/16 One Act Playwriting Competition has already been launched, details of which can also be found on the website. This competition now attracts world-wide entries – we received two hundred and twenty one entries last year.. The performance of the selected finalists’ plays in June is always a very exciting event which is unique to the Congleton Players.

The Players are very proud of their heritage and work hard to maintain the original aim of the founders which was “to bring good and varied entertainment to the people of Congleton”. We hope that you will join and support us in this enterprise and look forward to seeing old and new members sharing our Eightieth Anniversary year.
