In 1936 The Congleton Players Amateur Theatre Club was formed, providing quality entertainment for only 6d per show. Over seventy years later, the Society prides itself on bringing affordable theatre to the community of Congleton and others in the North West, from thrillers such as "Broken Glass" by Arthur Miller and "Wait Until Dark" by Frederick Knott, to comedy such as the classic "Allo Allo" by David Croft & Jimmy Perry and "Fawlty Towers" for which Congleton Players have been nominated for a range of awards.
Each year, between October and April, we stage three plays. Open auditions mean all members have a chance to 'tread the boards'. Many members contibute their creative talents by becoming involved in set design and construction, make-up, costume and props, lighting, sound and other areas vital to the staging of a successful production.
Congleton Players are privileged to be part of the Daneside Theatre Trust community and we use the extensive facilities for our rehearsals, set building and, of course, our performances. We are one of several vibrant and thriving theatre-based groups who use the Daneside Theatre. A committee of 22 members manages the club and maintains the high production standards that have been established over many ears, as well as encouraging participation and community involvement.
'The Players' has a strong reputation within the North West and you are assured of a warm welcome if you want to get involved. Whatever your area of interest, you can contribute to suit your time commitments and enjoy being part of a friendly group. Come along and see us at performances, play readings and rehearsals to get to know us a little bit better. Congleton Players remains a success thanks to constant injections of 'new blood' and we hope this will continue - with your help!
Join up and receive regular newsletters, make new friends and expand your knowledge of the theatre.
If you would like to come to one of the pre-production play readings wether or not you want to act yourself, please e-mail us and we will send you the details. You may well not want to tread the boards, but you can still enjoy the vitality of being active in the theatre, in which case there are many opportunities to get involved in areas such as lighting, sound, set design and building, stage management, costume, make-up and a whole range of other stage craft opportunities. Please get in touch with us if you are interested in any of the vital non-acting roles that are so crucial. The actors in our productions can only do what they do due to the skill and talent of all the people you don't see on the night.
